Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to
i. Define Marriage
ii. Identify the forms of marriage practices
iii. State characteristics of the different marriage practices and items used in Nigeria.
Content:
Marriage is the legal union between a man and a woman to husband and wife.
Marriage practices are of different kinds depending of the customs and traditions of the different ethnic groups.
In Nigeria, there are basically three marriage practices which are :
a. Traditional marriage
b. Religious marriage (Christian marriage and Islamic marriage)
c. Court/ Ordinance marriage
Traditional marriage is the type of marriage where two families comes together to give their daughter out in marriage to the families of the husband. In this type of marriage, bride price is paid and gift items are such as kolanut, wine, palm oil, rice, and box of clothes to seal up the marriage. The two families blesses the husband and wife as a couple. Then eating, drinking and dancing is done.
Christian marriage is the type of marriage officiated by a pastor or a priest in the church. The pastor uses the Holy Bible to advise the couple and allow exchange of rings, taking of vow and signing of certificate. This is known as wedding.
A Christian marriage
The wife to be (bride) wears a wedding gown while the husband ( groom) is in suit. There is no room for separation or divorce.
Islamic marriage is the type of marriage performed in the mosque by an Imam. An Islamic service called Nikkai is performed by a Muslim leader at the bride parents, house or in the mosque. It allows many wives. It allows divorce and payment of bride price. The Holy Quran is used to advise the couple.

Court or Ordinance marriage is a type of marriage that takes place in the registry. It is performed by a registrar or local government official. The couple and witnesses are only allowed to sign the certificate and the registrar also signs before it is handed over to the couple. This gives legality to the marriage.
In this marriage, divorce (separation of marriage) is allowed. If a man and a woman marries another person when the existing marriage has not been dissolved (ended by law) have committed an offence called bigamy.
Previous Knowledge : Learners were familiar with marriage and types of marriages.
Presentation Step:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2: He/she introduces the new topic by asking the learners to define marriage
Step 3: He / she then ask the learners to identify the forms of marriage practices in Nigeria.
Step 4: The teacher explains and states the characteristics of each marriage forms in Nigeria
