Content :
What is a state?
A state is an organized political community under one government. The State is the second level or tier of government in Nigeria. In Nigeria, there are thirty-Six states and each of the state is headed by a Governor.
Qualities of a State.
To be regarded as a state, a state must have the following qualities :
i. Population : The number of people living in a place.
ii. Territory : An area of land belonging to the state.
iii. Freedom to govern itself : That is to have a right to vote in their political leaders.
iv. Have it’s own government : That is governor, local government chairmen, etc.
v. Resources to generate income : That is, ways of getting money to run the state. Like payment of taxes, rates, fines and penalties, grants from Federal government, etc.
vi. Presence of commerce : The activity of buying and selling on a large scale and having many businesses to make the state grow.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by asking, “what is a state?” The learners gave different ideas of a state.
Step 3 : The teacher then defines and describes a state in a simple way.
State 4 : He/she then state the qualities of a state. And explains each of the qualities mentioned.
