Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar with length as the measure of size of an object.
Content:
Length describes how long an object is.
Measurement is the determination of the actual length or size of an object.
Methods of measuring length.
Old methods: This is the use of handspan, arms length, strides(pace), foot length, etc. They are not accurate and reliable.
Old Methods of Measuring Length
Modern methods: This involves the use of measuring instruments such as ruler, tape rule, metre rule. These are standard and reliable all over the world.
Modern Instruments for measuring Length.
The unit of measuring length is metre (m). Other units are centimetre (cm), kilometre (km),
Metric unit of measuring length.
10 millimeters = 1 centimetre
10 centimeters = 1 decimeter
10 decimeter = 1 meter
1000 millimeters = 1meter
1000 meters = 1 kilometer.
100 centimeters = 1 meter
PRESENTATION STEPS:
STEP 1: The teacher revises the previous class work with the learners
STEP 2: Introduces the new topic by defining length
STEP 3: Explain methods of measuring length and list the instruments for measuring length
STEP 4: Identify the unit of measuring length and asked the learners to recite the metric unit of length
STEP 5: Demonstrate practically how to measure length of objects found in the classroom such as notebook, textbook, desk and chair, etc.
Evaluation:
The teacher reviews the lesson by asking the following questions:
1. What is length?
2. Mention two instruments for measuring length.
i. _______________________
ii. ______________________
3. The units of measuring length are :
i. __________________________
ii. __________________________
iii. _________________________
CONCLUSION: The teacher collects the learners note and marks. He then makes corrections where necessary.
