Introduction:

  • Begin by asking pupils if they know who lives in their house.
  • Explain that the people who live together and share a home make up a family.
  • Introduce the idea that families can be small or big.

Content:

Definition of Nuclear Family:

    • A nuclear family is made up of the father, mother, and their children living together in one house.
    • Example: Father, mother, brother, and sister.

    Members of the Nuclear Family:

      • Father (Dad)
      • Mother (Mom)
      • Children (sons and daughters)

      Definition of Extended Family:

        • An extended family includes the nuclear family plus other relatives who live close or together.
        • These relatives may include grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and sometimes close family friends.

        Members of the Extended Family:

          • Grandfather and Grandmother
          • Uncle and Aunt
          • Cousins
          • Sometimes, close family friends may be considered part of the extended family.

          Differences between Nuclear and Extended Family:

            • Nuclear family is smaller with only parents and children.
            • Extended family is bigger and includes other relatives.
            • Nuclear family usually lives in one house.
            • Extended family members may live together or nearby.

            Strategic Activities:

            • Pupils draw their own family tree showing members of their nuclear and extended family.
            • Class discussion on who belongs to their nuclear and extended family.
            • Role play: Pupils act out different family members and talk about their roles.
