Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Describe the traditional origin of the people of North Central.
ii. Mention the pre-colonial occupation of the people of North Central Zones.
iii. Identify the mode of transportation used in the North Central region of Nigeria.
Content :
North Central is known as the middle belt and is composed of six states which are : Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau and FCT. The region is known for Artisanal fisheries production because of numerous tentacles of inlnad water and streams.
General Yakubu Gowon Created 12 States to replace the nation’s four regions.
In North Central, we have Gbagyi, Gwandara (Abuja), Tiv, Idoma (Benue), Igala, Ebira (Kogi), Yoruba, Nipe (Kwara), Eggon, Tiv (Nasarawa), Nupe, Gbagyi (Niger) and Beron (Plateau) among others.
The major cities in the North Central are Ilorin, Jos, Minina, Lafia, Okene, Makurdi,. Mokwa, Suleja, Larun, Bida, etc.
Transportation in the North Central region are by busses, train, boat, personal vehicles and air.
The occupation of the North Central regions are agricultural activities like farming and fishing. Agricultural produce like yam, Guinea corn, cassava, rice, soya beans, are also abundant.
Also, there is problem of Insecurity and insurgency in the region such as ISWAP and Boko-Haram.
