Content :
Ordering of Numbers.
Ordering of numbers is the arrangement of some set of number in sequence, starting from the smallest to the largest or from the largest to the smallest.
For example :
A. Arranging numbers in ascending or descending orders.
1. Arrange the numbers from the lowest to the highest – Ascending order :
i. 18, 15, 17, 16, 19 = 15, 16, 17, 18, 19.
ii. 2, 4, 0, 3, 5, 1 = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
iii. 103, 105, 101, 104, 102 = 101, 102, 103, 104, 105.
2. Arrange numbers from highest to lowest – descending order :
i. 6, 9, 8, 10, 7 = 10, 9, 8, 7, 6
ii. 50, 53, 49, 51, 52 = 53, 52, 51, 50, 49
iii. 100, 120, 110, 140, 130 = 140, 130, 120, 110, 100.
B. We can also order number using “more than” or “less than”.
More than : The number more than is added to the given number to get the new number.
Less than : In this case, the number less than is subtracted or minus from the given number to get the new number.
For example :
i. 1 more than 22 is 23. (22 + 1) = 23
ii. 1 less than 20 is 19. (20 – 1) = 19
iii. 10 more than 140 is 150. (140 + 10) = 150
iv. 10 less than 180 is 170. (180 – 10) = 170
C. Ordering of number using “greater than” or “less than”.
When a bigger number comes first we use greater than but if the smaller number comes first, we write less than.
We use place value to determine the number greater than or less than. This is done by comparing using hundred, tens and unit.
For example :
i. 16 is greater than 15.
ii. 33 is less than 42
iii. 107 is less than 170
iv. 192 is greater than 129.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : He /she introduces the new topic to the learners by explaining Ordering of numbers using ascending and descending orders.
Step 3 : Explains ordering of numbers using more than or less than with several examples.
Step 4 : Orders number by comparing two at a time using greater than or less than.
Evaluation : The teacher reviews the lesson by giving the following questions:
1. Arrange the following number in ascending order:
i. 90, 9, 19, 190 = ______ ______ ______ ______
ii. 29, 26, 28, 27, 30 = ____ _____ _____ _____ ______
2. Put greater than or less than in the gap.
i. 26 is _______________________ 62.
ii. 190 is _____________________ 119.
iii. 150 is ____________________ 120.
iv. 113 is ____________________ 118.
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
Assignment :
1. Arrange these numbers in descending order.
i. 76, 79, 77, 80, 78 = ______ ______ ______ ______ ______
ii. 105, 102, 104, 101, 103 = _______ _______ _______ _______ _______
2. Complete the following :
i. 1 more than 48 is ________.
ii. 1 less than 30 is ________.
iii. 10 less than 150 is _______.
iv. 10 more than 100 is ________.
