Instructional Material : Chart showing inequality sign of ordering numbers (<, > or =).
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Ordering of numbers.
ii. Identify the symbols of greater than (>) and less than (<).
iii. Use symbols to order set of numbers.
Content :
Using Symbols to compare numbers.
The symbols used to compare which number is ‘greater than’ or ‘less than’ are called inequality symbols.
< – Less than : This is formed when the left elbow is folded.
> – Greater than : This is formed when the right elbow is folded.
For examples :
59 is less than 95. Using symbols, it can be written as 59 < 95.
583 is greater than 385. Using symbols, we can write this as 583 > 385.
Ordering Numbers.
When ordering numbers, we make use of the place value by expanding the given set of numbers as shown below :
1.) 732 __________ 743.
Considering hundreds 700 = 700,
Then, comparing tens 30 < 40,
Therefore, 732 < 743.
2.) 845 __________ 537
Comparing the place value hundreds, 800 > 500.
Therefore, 845 > 537.
3.) Consider 546 and 545 :
Comparing 500 = 500; 40 = 40; and 6 > 5
Therefore, 546 > 545
Put the symbol >, < or = in-between the gaps.
1.) 275 _______ 265
2.) 722 _______ 424
3.) 339 ________526
4.) 318 ________ 813
5.) 242 ________ 553
6.) 999 ________ 700 + 299
7.) 68 – 68 _______ 78
8.) 21 + 21 ________ 32
9.) 50 – 13 ________ 37
10.) 166 _________ 96
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by explaining ordering of numbers using symbols.
Step 3 : The teacher then explains the use of place value in expanded form to compare before using the symbols of inequalities.
Step 4 : Gives the learners some activity to do on the board by calling them one after the other.
Evaluation :
Put the symbols ‘>’ or ‘<‘ in the space to order the given pairs of numbers.
1. 405 _________ 945
2. 106 _________ 601
3. 818 _________ 188
4. 112 _________ 102
5. 765 _________ 567
6. 400 + 213 _______ 513
7. 600 – 120 ________ 580
8. 876 _________ 276 + 300
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson learners were able to answer the questions correctly. The teacher marks their notebooks and makes necessary corrections.
