Instructional Material : Chart showing part of a circle with description of each part.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Defines a circle and identify its parts.
Content :
A path traced from a fixed point such that the same distance from that point is maintained, this is called a circle .
Parts of a circle
There are special words to describe different parts of a circle as shown in the diagram of the circle below.
1. Circumference of a circle : This is the distance round the circle.
2. Radius : This is a straight line from the center of a circle to any part of the circumference.
3. Chord : A straight line across a circle which starts and ends at two points on the circumference.
4. Diameter : This is a line which passes through the center of a circle and divides it into two equal parts. A diameter equals two radius.
5. An Arc : is any curved part cut out of the circumference of a circle.
6. Sector : The area enclosed by two radii and an arc . It looks like a cone.
7. Segment : The area enclosed by an arc and a chord .
8. A straight line which touches the circumference of a circle is called a tangent.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by describing a circle and identify of gy some of it parts.
Step 3 : Explain each part listed above
Evaluation :
Revision questions:
1.) List five parts of a circle.
_________________, _________________, _________________, _________________, _________________.
2.) A ______________ is an area enclosed by two radii and an arc.
3.) A chord is _______________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________.
4.) A straight line from the center which touches the circumference of a circle at any point is called a _______________.
Conclusion : The teacher reviews the lesson by explaining all over again for a better understanding of the lesson .
