Class: Primary 5
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Plane Shapes (Quadrilaterals)
Duration : 80 minutes
Period : Double Periods
Reference Book :
- New Method Mathematics for Primary Schools , Book 5.
- Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for Primary Schools , (Primary 4 – 6)
- Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing examples of Quadrilaterals.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Explain the meaning of quadrilaterals
ii. Give examples of quadrilateral
iii. State the properties of each quadrilaterals mentioned in (ii) above.
Content :
Quadrilateral is a two dimensional shape that has four sides and four angles. The sum of angles in a quadrilateral is 360°.
Examples of quadrilateral are rhombus, rectangle, square, parallelogram and trapezium.
Properties of each quadrilaterals:
1. Square:
All the four sides are equal. Each angle equals 90°. It has 4 lines of symmetry.
2. Rectangle:
Opposite sides are equal. Each angle equals 90°.( The angles are equal). It has 2 lines of symmetry.
3. Parallelogram:
Opposite sides are equal and parallel. The angles opposite each other are equal. It has no line of symmetry.
4. Rhombus:
All the sides are equal. Opposite sides are parallel. The angles opposite each other are equal. It has two lines of symmetry. The lines of symmetry meet at right angle. ( i.e. the line are perpendicular).
5. Trapezium:
It has one pair of parallel sides. The sides are not equal. The angles are not equal. It has no line of symmetry.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally on 2-dimensional plane shapes.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by describing quadrilaterals and gives examples of quadrilaterals
Step 3 : Describe the properties of each quadrilaterals mentioned in step 2 above.
Evaluation :
The teacher review his/ her Lesson by asking the following questions :
1.) What is the total sum of angles of a quadrilateral? _________ (a) 180° (b) 360° (c) 270° (d) 90°
2.) How many sides has a quadrilateral? ________. (a) 3 (b) 2 (c) 4 (d) 5
3.) A quadrilateral with four lines of symmetry is called a _________. (a) Triangle (b) Rectangle (c) Square (d) Kite
4.) A ___________________ and a _________________ both has two lines of symmetry.
5.) List four examples of quadrilaterals: ____________________, ____________________, ____________________ and ____________________.
6.) Which of these has one pair of parallel sides? (a) parallelogram (b) trapezium (c) rectangle (d) square
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson learners were able to answer the following questions correctly while the teacher makes some corrections.
Assignment :
1. State two properties of the following quadrilaterals:
i. Trapezium ii. Square
iii. Parallelogram iv. Rectangle
Mention two quadrilaterals that have four corners as 90°.
i. ________________ ii. _______________
3. Draw and name five examples of quadrilaterals.
