i. Define sentences and give examples
ii. Classify sentences into two namely positive and negative sentences
iii. Identify the differences between positive and negative sentences
Content :
A sentence is a group of words that makes sense. It consist of a subject and a predicate .
Sentences can be classified into two which are :
i. Affirmative (Positive) sentences
ii. Negative sentences
A positive sentence is a sentence that expresses the fact in a statement. For examples:
a. John came here today.
b. Obi will come tomorrow.
c. He goes away.
d. I sang a song.
Negative sentence is a sentence in which “not” is introduced before the main verb. For examples:
i. Joh did not come here today.
ii. I did not sing a song.
iii. Obi will not come tomorrow
iv. He does not go away.
Note : –
When forming a negative sentence from a positive sentence:
1. The main verb in the past tense is changed to present tense, once “not” is introduced.
2. Some auxiliary verbs such as did, does are also introduced.
Presentation Steps:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson taught by asking questions orally. He/ she then introduces the new topic to the learners by defining a sentence.
Step 2: He/ she then classify sentences into two, which are positive sentence and negative sentence.
Step 3: The teacher then describes the positive and negative sentences with several examples
Step 4: He/ she then states the differences between the positive and negative sentences
Evaluation: The teacher reviews the lesson by asking the following questions :
A. Turn the following positive sentences into negative sentences.
i. The baby cried very loudly.
ii. I have lost my pen.
iii. They said some prayers for him.
iv. Dr. Adesuwa came to our school.
v. The Pupils usually sing a song.
vi. The postman arrived here early.
B. Change the following negative sentences to an affirmative sentences.
1. He did not drive the dog away.
2. Okon is not coming here.
3. The boys can’t swim.
4. I shan’t write a letter.
5. Mr. Kínní doesn’t live in Agege.
6. They weren’ t happy with their mother.
7. I’ m not going to speak now.
8. Boys don’t play netball.
9. He said that he could not buy it.
10. She wasn’ t in the room.
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson , learners were able to answer the questions correctly. The teacher makes corrections where necessary.
