Content :
What is preposition?
A preposition is a word that tells us the position of something or someone in relation to another thing or person.
It is a word which is placed before a noun or a pronoun to show its relationship with other words in a sentence. Preposition can be used to show position, direction, time, manner and similarity .
Examples of prepositions are : up, down, behind, of, before, with, in, on, through, off, near, within, to, over, under, among, below, across, from, etc.
Types of Preposition
1. Prepositions of Position : This is used to point out the position of a person or a thing. For example , behind, at, beside, above, on, under, between, in, etc.
a. The cup is on Seyi’s desk.
b. There is a pencil under John’s chair.
c. I live at 15, Tapa Street Lagos .
2. Prepositions of Direction : These show the channel of movement of a person or a thing. For example: out of, into, from, down, to, etc.
a. Nnanna ran out of the classroom when he heard the bang.
b. The careless driver fell into a ditch.
c. Mofetoluwa is climbing up the staircase.
3. Preposition of Time : These show the relationship between the period or time an action happened or is happening. For example , on, in, at, after, before, by, for, since, etc.
a. The girls have been cooking since morning.
b. I have known her before you.
4. Preposition of Manner : Preposition of manner is all about how a certain thing happened or is done. Sometimes it is even referred to as preposition of method. These include : on, by, with, like, etc.
a. Mr. Oladebo draws with much skills.
b. Mr. Ikechukwu is a musicologist by profession.
