Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define Pronouns and Give examples of pronouns.
ii. List types of pronouns and explain them.
iii. Identify the pronouns in any given sentences
Content :
Pronouns are words used instead of a noun. It is used to replace a noun to avoid repetition.
Examples of pronouns are : he, she, it, you, they, we, him, her, his, mine, yours, hers, ours, etc.
Types of Pronouns
There are several types of pronouns.
1. Possessive Pronouns : These are pronouns used to show ownership of something or what belong to a person. E.g. Mine, yours, ours, his, hers, theirs, etc
i. This is my book. It is mine.
ii. That is John’s pencil. It is his
2. Demonstrative Pronouns : These are pronouns used to describe something that is near or far away from us. For examples : this, that, these and those. This and These are used for near objects while That and Those are used to point to object that are far away.
“That” and “This” are used for singular nouns.
“These” and “Those” are used for plural nouns.
i. This is a book (Singular)
b. These are books. (Plural)
ii. That is a table. (Singular)
b. Those are tables. (Plural)
3. Interrogative Pronouns : These are pronouns used in asking questions. They are mostly “wh” words. For example, who, where, which, why, when, what and how.
i. What is that?
ii. Who are you?
iii. Whose bag is that?
4. Reflexive Pronouns : These are pronouns used to show the person that performed the action in a sentence. They end with “self”. For example, myself, himself, herself, itself, yourself and our selves themselves
i. Kola did it himself.
ii. I wrote it myself.
iii. The dog bit itself.
iv. They worked it out themselves.
5. Relative Pronouns : These are pronouns used to show relationship between nouns in a sentence. It provides more information about the subject it relates to. E.g. Who, which, whom, etc.
“who” is used for person while “which” is used for things.
i. This is the woman who came here.
ii. This is the bag which I found.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by asking them to define pronoun and give examples.
Step 3 : Identify and explains the types of pronouns with examples.
Step 4 : Makes simple sentences with the different types of pronouns.

3. Give twenty examples of pronouns.
4. What is possessive pronoun?
5. What is demonstrative pronoun?
Conclusion : The teacher concludes the lesson by correcting the learners and marks their notes.
