Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define purification of water
ii. List and explain the methods of purifying water.
Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar water, it sources and uses.
Content :
Purifying means making something clean.
Purification of Water is the different methods applied in order to make dirty water clean and suitable for use.
Dirty water can be made clean in so many ways. These are :
1. Boiling : This method helps to kill seen or unseen germs and particles in the water.
2. Filtration : This is a method of removing undissolved particles in the water.
3. Chlorination : This is the addition of chlorine to water to make it clean for drinking.
4. Alum : This can also be used to make water clean for use. It allows all the particles in the water to settle down before sieving is done.
Stages in the Filtration Process.
1. Boil the water unclean water to kill the germs
2. Allow the boiled water to cool down.
3. Filter the unclean boiled water using a local water filter or modern water filter.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by explaining purification of Water.
Step 3 : The teacher asks the learners to identify the methods of purifying water.
Step 4 : He / she then describe the method of purifying water by combining them.
