Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Identify and state the qualities of good water
ii. Mentions the qualities of bad water and substances that contaminates water
iii. State the effects or dangers of drinking bad water.
Previous Knowledge : Learners have been taught water, its sources and qualities of water.
Content :
Qualities of a clean or good water
1 A good water is odourless , that is, it does not smell or odour
2. A good water is colourless, that is, it does not have any colour
3. A clean water is tasteless, that is, it does not have any taste.
4. A clean water does not contain any particles. A good and clean water has no soluble and insoluble particles.
Clean and good water for drinking
Qualities of bad or dirty water
i.) Dirty water has colour.
ii.) Dirty water has odour, that is, it smells.
iii.) Dirty water has bad taste.
iv) Dirty water contains particles either soluble or insoluble.

Substances that contaminate water
There are different substances that can contaminate water, that is, make it unfit for drinking. These substances are:
ii. Oil spillage
ii. Washing in streams
iii. Using chemicals for fishing e. g. Gamalin 20
iv. Dumping of waste materials into water body
v. Release of untreated sewage into the water
Releasing of industrial waste into the water, thereby polluting the water.
Dangers of Drinking Bad Water.
Drinking bad water can cause :
i.) diarrhoea
ii.) typhoid fever
iii.) dysentery
iv.) vomiting
v.) stomach ache
vi.) guinea worm
vii.) cholera
Other effects of bad water is that oil spillage destroys all living things in the river. It can also result in skin infections when we bathe with contaminated water.
Presentation Steps:
Step I: The teacher revises the previous topic with the learners by asking them to mention sources of water.
Step II: He/ She introduces the new topic( Qualities of water)
Step III: He / She differentiate between the qualities of clean and dirty water.
Step IV: The teacher then asks the learners to identify the effects of drinking bad or dirty water.
Evaluation: The teacher reviews the lesson by asking the following questions :
