Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson , learners will be able to :
i. Define question tags;
ii. List and explain the types of question tags: affirmative and negative;
iii. Describe how to form question tags and its response.
Previous Knowledge: Revision of last terms work with the learners .
Content:
Question tags are phrases in question form, which are asked at the end of the statement.
For examples:
“He has gone, hasn’t he?” He has gone is the statement while hasn’t he is the question tag. Question tags are also called question phrases.
ii. She doesn’t live in Kumasi, does she?
iii. He will not go to school, will he?
iv. I went there , didn’t I?
In constructing question tags, the following should be noted:
(a) If a statement is affirmative (positive), the question tag is negative.
(b) If the statement is negative , the question tag is affirmative (positive).
(c) The tense of the verb in the statement should be used in the question tag.
(d) Pronouns are used I question tags, instead of the nouns or names mentioned.
An affirmative statement is the one without ‘not’ while a negative statement is the one with not.
For examples :
A.) Examples of Affirmative statements are:
1. He has come.
2. He is going to school.
3. We were in the room.
4. I went there.
B.) Examples of Negative statements are:
1. He hasn’t come. (He has not come)
2. He isn’t going to school. (He is not going to school)
3. We weren’t in the room. (We were not in the room)
4. I didn’t go there. (I did not go there)
Presentation Steps:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous terms work with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2: He/ she introduces the new lesson by asking the learners to define question tags
Step 3 : He/ she further defines question tags and list the types
Step 4: He/ she then asks the learners to differentiate between positive and negative sentences or statements.
Step 5: The teacher groups the learners into two asking them to give five examples of positive and negative statements each.
Evaluation :
The teacher reviews the lesson by summarizing the topic all over again and gives some questions as follows:

2. They were going home, ___________________?
3. You mustn’t go home, ___________________?
4. He is running, _________________?
5. The boy will eat the food, __________________?
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions by forming tags.
