Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Describe raising of poultry (fowl)
ii. Identify the types fowl to raise and types of feeds given each group.
iii. State the care given to fowl (chicken).
Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar with rearing of chicken
Content :
There are steps involved in raising farm animals. E.g. Fowl.
A farmer who is ready to raise livestock must make proper plans and certain provisions to ensure good and healthy growth.
Chicks are young chicken that are reared extensively or intensively. It may be reared using a deep litter system or a battery cage system.
Below are different steps involves in raising a fowl ( chicken)
1. Provision of houses or shelter for chicks: The houses provided for the chicks must be well ventilated.
2. Buying a young chicken: The farmer must make sure he buys enough chicks, i.e. young chicken. These young chicks are been fed with good balanced diet will now develop through growers to layers and broilers.
Layers are egg-laying hen while broiler is a matured hen that is ready for meat production.
3. Daily provision of food and water: There should be sufficient supply of food and water to chicks in order to increase their growth to laying hen and broilers.
The baby chicks are started on chick’s mash. Mash is a mixture of ground feeds for livestock or poultry. The layers and the broilers are fed through feeding trough. A supply of clean water should be provided in a drinking trough.

6. Removal of sick or dead animals among living animals. This is known as culling.
7. Selling or slaughtering of matured animals.
