Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Describe goat as farm animals to be reared.
ii. Identify the types of rearing systems of a goat and explains.
iii. Mentions some breeds of goat and things to put in place to raise a goat.
Content :
Goat is a hollow horned small ruminant that belongs to the family known as Bovidae. Goat is reared for meat, milk, hides and skin.
The goat milk is the richest of all the milk produced by animals.
There are three important systems in rearing or raising goat. These are:
1. Extensive System: In this system, the goat is allowed to roam about in search of pasture and water.
2. Semi-intensive System: In this system, goats are provided with house which protects them against adverse weather condition like heat, cold and rain. They graze during the day and come back to sleep at night.
3. Intensive System: In this system, the goats are confined within the stall in a building with limited access to grazing.
In raising farm animals such as goat, the farmer has to give utmost care and attention to the following:
1. Housing
2. Feeding and
3. Hygiene of the animals.
Breeds of Goats.
There are different breeds of goats and these are:
i. Sokoto-Red
ii. Borno Red
iii. West African Dwarf goat
iv. Angora
v. Nandi
vi. Anglo Nubian
vii. Boer
viii. Saanen
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revision of the previous lesson with the learner by asking questions orally
Step 2 : The teacher introduces the topic by explaining how to raise or rear a goat. Identify the best methods of rearing goats and their breeds
Step 3 : State the basic things needed to raise or rear goat on a farm, such as system to apply, housing, feeding, and care given to the animal.
