Relationship between federal, state and local government.
In Nigeria, there are three tiers of government. These are:
- The Federal government
- The State government and
- The Local government.
The Federal Government
The Federal government is the central authority that represents the entire nation in external affairs and internal affairs of common interest. It is headed by the President, who is the number one citizen of a nation. It has the governing and law making body known as the National Assembly. The national Assembly is made up of two chamber, the Upper chamber (House of senate) and the lower chamber (House of Representative)
The State Government
The State government is the second tier of government. There are thirty – six states and the FCT, Abuja. The head of the state is the governor. The state governor oversees the state councils of chiefs, state civil service commission and the local government services commission and so on.
The Local Government
This is the third tier of government in Nigeria. It is also known as the grassroot government, because it is the closest to the people. It is headed by Local Government Chairman. It also has its own legislative body which makes bye laws for her. The legislatures are called Honourables and they have Supervising Councilors for work, education, revenue, etc. There are 774 local government areas in Nigeria.
