Third Term Lesson Note for Week
Class: Primary 5
Subject: Basic Science and Technology
Topic: Respiratory System ( Breathing)
Duration : 40 minutes
Period : Single Period
Reference Book :
- Basic Science and Technology for Primary Schools, Book 5.
- Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for Primary Schools, (Primary 4 – 6).
- Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing organs of Respiration.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define respiration
ii. Identify the organ of Respiration
iii. Describe the processes of respiration
Content :
Breathing is the act of taking air into and out of the lungs. Every living thing breathes.
When air is breathed in, we say air is inhaled. While, when air is breathed out, we say air is exhaled.
The air we breathe in is called oxygen. The air we breathe out is called carbondioxide.
The respiratory organs in the body are:
i. Nostrils
ii. Mouth
iii. Branches of bronchi ( bronchioles)
iv. Lungs.
The Respiratory Process:
Air breathed in through the nostrils or mouth, passes through the wind pipe into the lungs. When oxygen gets into the body it burns food substances in the blood, to give the body energy. Carbondioxide is released and passed out through the nostril or mouth again.
Food + oxygen = water + carbondioxide + energy
Functions of Respiratory Organs:
1.) Nostrils: draws air into the wind pipe.
2.) Wind pipe: connects the nose and bronchi.
3.) Bronchus: carries air from wind pipe to lungs.
4.) Lungs: exchanges oxygen for carbondioxide in the blood.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with learners
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by defining Respiration and identify organs used for Respiration.
Step 3 : Describe the process of Respiration and explains some terms used.
Evaluation questions:
1. What is respiration?
2. Mention the respiratory organs: _____________, _____________, ______________, _____________
3. _______________ combines with food to give us _______________.
4. The organ of respiration that exchange oxygen for carbondioxide in the blood is the ________________.
5. Explain the following :
(a) Inhaled: _____________________________________________
(b) Exhaled: ______________________________________________
