Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to
i. Define Rights as a component of Civic Education
ii. Identify and list the rights of a citizen
iii. Define duties and state duties of citizens and constituted authorities.
Content:
Rights are the privileges, freedom, immunity or power that we enjoyed as a citizen of a particular country.
According to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, citizens are endowed to some fundamental rights which no one has the authority or power to disrupt or stop.
The following are the fundamental human rights of every citizens of a countrya
1. Right to life.
2. Right to own property
3. Right to vote and be voted for.
4. Right to Education
5. Freedom of speech
6. Freedom of movement
7. Freedom of expression
8. Freedom of religion.
Duties is also known as responsibilities. This is simply the benefits in which a citizen must enjoy from the government and what is expected of a citizen to do to his or her country.
Duties can be define as the responsibility or roles played by the citizen and the government.
Duties of citizens to the nation.
1. Payment of tax
2. Obedience to the laws
3. Respect for one another
4. Voting during elections
5. Respect for national symbols
Presentation Steps:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous lesson taught with the learners in form of questions and answer.
Step 2: He/ she introduces the new lesson by asking, “What is right?”, “what are the fundamental right of every citizens?”
Step 3: The teacher then defines duties and state the responsibilities of citizens
Step 4: He/ she identifies the responsibility of government to their citizens.
