Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define rock and identify its classification.
ii. List and explain the types of rocks with examples
iii. Mention some of the uses of rocks.
Content :
Rocks are hard inorganic substances formed by heat or pressure on the earth or by the action of water.
Classification of Rocks.
Rocks can be classified, grouped and identified based on the following :
i. Age
ii. Texture formation
iii. Colours
iv. Constituents
v. Degree of their resistance to weather conditions.
Types of Rocks
There are basically three types of rocks. These are:
a. Igneous rocks : These are rocks formed from the hot molten magma which later cools down. Examples of igneous rocks are : granite, basalt, gabbro, trachyte
b. Sedimentary rocks : These are rocks formed by breaking down pre-existing rocks by some agents such as water, heat, plants, etc and are deposited by waves . These rocks often start as sediments carried in rivers and deposited in lakes and oceans. When buried, the sediments lose water and become cemented to form rock. Examples of sedimentary rocks are : sandstone, limestone and shale.
c. Metamorphic rocks : These are rocks formed as a result of change in climatic conditions from pre-existing rocks. Examples of metamorphic rocks are : slate, marbles, schist, gneiss, etc.
Uses of Rocks
Rocks are useful for various purposes . These includes:
1. Rocks are used building of houses
2. It is used in the constructions of roads and bridges .
3. Rocks are used in the making of valuables such as gold, iron ore,
4. They are used in the manufacturing of cement, E.g. Limestone
5. They are used as fuel . E.g. Coal
6. Some Rocks serves as tourist attraction site. E.g. Olumo rock in Ogun State .
Presentation Steps:
Step 1 : The teacher begins his/her lesson by asking questions from the previous topic taught from the learners .
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by asking the learners to define rocks.
Step 3 : He/she then explains the classifications of rocks
Step 4 : The teacher then mentions the types of rocks, describe each types with examples.
Step 5 : He/she then asks the learners to state the uses of rocks.
Evaluation :
The teacher reviews his/ her lesson by asking the following questions :
