Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar with simple machines and it examples
Behavioural Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Describe the uses of some simple machines
ii. Identify parts of a simple machine
iii. Demonstrate the safe use of simple machine
Content :
A simple machine is any object that makes our work easy. Simple machines make our work faster and easier. They are not difficult to use.
Examples of simple machines are:
i. Scissors ii. Table knife
iii. Wheel barrow iv. Broom
v. Spoon vi. Hammer
viii. Hoe viii. Bottle opener
ix. Sharpener x. Stapler
xi. Spanner xii. Nail cutter
xiii. Saw xiv. Screw driver
Simple machines and its uses.
1. Bottle opener: This is used for opening bottled drink
2. Hammer: This is used for driving nails into wood to hold joint together.
3. Catapault: This is used to kill birds.
4. Scissors: This is used for cutting clothes or papers.
5. Wheel barrow: This is used for carrying loads.
6. Hoe: This is used for turning soil over.
7. Saw: This is used for cutting woods or metals into different sizes and shapes.
8. Plier: This is used for tightening and loosening of nuts.
9. Spoon: This is used for carrying or putting food in the mouth.
10. Sharpener: This is used for sharpening pencils.
11.Stapler: This is used for holding papers together.
Materials for making Simple machines
Simple machines can be made from different materials such as steel, rope, rubber, wood or plastic, etc.
The parts of a simple machine is divided into two namely:
(a) Blade : which is made of metal or steel.
(b) Handle: which is made of wood, plastics, or rubber.
Safe Use of simple machines.
Do not play with simple machine, because they can be dangerous and can harm us when they are not properly used.
Simple machines can be used safely and not causing accident by following the safety rules.
1. Do not hold the metal part or blade to avoid cuts
2. Do not play with simple machines at home and in school.
3. Do not drag the simple machine with force from one another.
4. Keep them safely when not in use.
5. Do not run when holding a machine such as knife and point it downward when moving with it.
Presentation Steps:
Step I: The teacher revises the previous lessons with the learners to gain their attention and arouse their interest by asking questions
Step II: He or She introduces the new lesson by asking the learners one after the other, ‘State the uses of different machine?’
Step III: He or she asks learners to identify and lists materials used in making simple machines.
Step IV: The teacher then demonstrates the safe use of simple machine and calls the learners one by to demonstrate it.
Step V: He or she then writes notes on the white board for the learners to write in their note books.
Evaluation: The teacher reviews the lesson by asking the learners the following questions as stated below:
1. State the uses of the following simple machine listed below:
(a) Knife: ____________________________________
(b) Broom: ___________________________________
(c) Spanner: __________________________________
(d) Spoon: ___________________________________
2. To use a knife for cutting, we must hold the metal blade. (True, False)
3. Simple machines can cause injuries when handled wrongly. (True, False)
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions while the teacher makes some necessary corrections.
Assignment:
1. Mention two examples of simple machines made with metals and wooden handle.
