Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Identify and name the sense organ for smelling.
ii. Identify the types of smell.
iii. Differentiate between good and bad smell.
Content :
The organ of smell is the nose. The nose has two openings which are called the nostrils. Smell can be divided into two:
1. Pleasant smell : This is a good and sweet smell. For examples, smell of flowers, perfumes, body cream, air freshener, food ( fried chicken and fish), etc.
2. Unpleasant smell : This is a bad and irritating smell. For examples, rotten food, dust bin, dirty water, dead animals, dirty socks, etc.
Ways of removing bad and unpleasant smell from our environment.
1. Waste bin should be emptied daily.
2. Clothes and underwears should be washed regularly.
3. Plates should be washed after meal.
4. Toilets and bathrooms should be washed regularly. Toilets must be flushed after use.
5. Gutters and drainages around the house should be washed and cleaned regularly.
6. Wet, dirty shoes should be cleaned and left out to dry.
7. We must have our bath daily.
8. We must brush our teeth after each meal.
Ways of maintaining pleasant smell.
1. Toilets and bathrooms should be sanitised with disinfectants.
2. Body odour should be prevented and removed by use of body sprays and deodorants.
3. Air fresheners should be used in wardrobes, cupboards and around the house.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revision of the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by describing the sense of smell
Step 3 : Distinguish between pleasant smell and unpleasant smell
Step 4 : Mention ways of removing bad smell in our environment.
