Content :
A verb is an action word or a doing word. For examples : come, go, sits, jumps, run, play, reads, writes, wash, sweep, etc.
Tenses of a verb is used to indicate the time an action took place. It could be present, past, future or continuous.
Today, we shall be discussing the Simple Present Tense.
Simple Present Tense :
The Simple present tense is used to indicate or tell us about an action that happens always, everyday or daily basis.
There are two forms of the Simple present tense. These are :
i. Simple present tense (singular)
ii. Simple present tense (plural)
The singular simple present tense of a verb takes “s” or “es”. It is used with a singular Subject noun or pronoun such as He, she, It, John, Ade, Everyone, etc.
They can be used with the following verbs listed below : comes, washes, lives, goes, cooks, likes, plays, sings, fetches, sleeps, etc.
The plural simple present tense of a verb does not take “s” or “es”. It is used with the plural Subject noun or pronouns such as I, You, We, They, Olu and John, etc.
They can be used with the following plural verbs such as : like, jump, wash, go, play, cook, sing, fetch, sleep, live, etc.
Evaluation :
Complete the following sentences with the Simple present tense of the words given in brackets.
1. My mother always __________ cake for my birthday. (bake)
2. I ___________ in Kano. (lives)
3. Olu and Kemi ___________ to school everyday. (comes)
4. She __________ riding bicycle. (likes)
5. They _________ to church every Sunday. ( goes)
6. You _________ always instead of reading your book. (play)
7. He _________ the grasses every weekends. (cut)
8. The children ________ chocolates and sweets once a month. (eats)
9. We usually _________ to the night market on Tuesday. (go)
10. The girls __________ in the library every evening. (study)
