LEARNING OBJECTIVES :By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Explain the term fittings
ii. Describe Wood finishing and method applied.
iii. Identify and State reasons for wood finishing.
CONTENT :
Fittings are devices that take place when fixing doors, windows, gates, drawer etc that enhance easy closing and opening. The devices used for fitting purpose are classified as:
1. Nails
2. Screws
3. Bolts and Nuts
4. Hinges (Tee hinge, Butt hinge, Flat hinge, Strap hinge, Casement hinge.
5. Locks (Box lock, Mortise lock)
WOOD FINISHING
Wood finishing is the process of preparing wood surfaces to receive wood finishes. It is treatment giving to the wooden surface. Wood finishing involves:
1) Planning: The tools required for planning the surfaces of the wood are planners, smoothing plane.
2) Scraping: The tools required for scrapping the surfaces of the wood are scrappers.
3) Sanding the wood surfaces to the required size: the materials required for sanding the surfaces of the wood are abrasive (sand paper).
4) Wood Finishes: Wood finishes are the decorative materials which are applied to the wood surfaces which may prevent insect attack, protect the wood and beautify the wood surfaces. The wood finishes come up in liquid form or paste form. It adds to the pleasing appearance of the wood. These are:
i. Varnishes
ii. French polishes
iii. Wax paint
iv. Creosote from coal tar
v. Oils
vi. Wax polishes
vii. Enamels
viii. Lacquers
ix. Wood fillers
x. Preservatives
xi. Formica
Method of Applying Wood Finishes
Various wood finishes are applied on the wood to obtain different wooden surface such as:
a) Painted wood
b) Polished wooden surface
Varnished wooden surface
a)Brushing
b) Spraying
c) Dipping (cold immersion method)
d) Rubbing.
All these finishes are applied to the wood to help to protect the wood against insect, fungi attack.
Reasons for Wood finishing
1) To protect the wood against insect attack.
2) To beautify the general outlook of the wood.
3) To prevent wood from absorbing moisture.
4) To keep dirt away from the pres of the wood.
5) To check discoloration.
FORMICA
Formica is a special material use in covering wooden furniture; it has many designs and colour which add more beauty to the furniture. Formica is use in finishing:
a) Table top.
b) Centre table
c) Dining table.
d) Shelves etc.
The material that can be use for table top are plywood, glass, sheet metal, ceramics, marble, tiles, plastic etc.
CARE:
i) Dust the surface with clean damp cloth to remove dust and then dry immediately.
ii) Do not put hot pan directly on the Formica surface.
iii) Do not use hard abrasive for cleaning Formica to avoid scratching.
