Instructional Material : Chart showing the types of soil.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define Soil
ii. List and describe the soil types.
iii. Compare the sandy soil and clay soil based on water holding capacity.
Content :
Meaning of Soil.
Soil is the uppermost layer of the earth crust in which plants grows and animals.
Types of Soil.
There are three major types of soil, which are :
1. Sand soil
2. Clayey soil
3. Loamy soil
Properties of Soil.
Sandy soil is made up of large particles with large air spaces. The particles are loosely packed which makes them light.
Sandy soil has low water retaining capacity. The texture of sand soil is rough and coarse. It is reddish brown in colour.
Clayey soil is made up of tiny particles. It has little air space. The particles are packed closely and it is heavy. It has smooth and sticky texture. It is red in colour.
Clayey soil can hold or retain water. Clayey soil can be used to mould and make objects like cup, plate, spoon, or animal
Loamy soil has medium particles. It is a mixture of sand, clay and humus. Humus is dead plant and animal remains in the soil. It is moderate in texture. It is dark brown in colour.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by defining soil.
Step 3 : Identify and list the types of soil.
Step 4 : Describe the types of soil and determine which soil can hold water very well.
Evaluation :
1. ____________ is the uppermost layer of the earth surface in which plants are grown and animals live.
2. The are __________ types of soil.
3. Mention the three soil types.
i. ______________________
ii. ______________________
iii. _____________________
4. The soil that has high capacity to hold water is ______________. (a) sandy soil (b) clayey soil (c) loamy soil
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
