Subject : Basic Science
Topic : Sound Energy
Duration : 40 minutes
Period : Single Period
Reference Book :

Instructional Material : Chart showing examples of objects that produces sound.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define sound and sound energy
ii. Identify objects that produces sound.
Content :
Sound is the result of changing mechanical energy into vibrations. The ear hears sound when air, metal, plastic or any other material vibrates.
Sound Energy is the energy that produce sound. Both living and non-living things produce or make sound.
An object can be identified or known through the sound it makes or produces.
There are two types of sound
1. Pleasant sound
2. Unpleasant sound
Pleasant sound are sounds that we enjoy or like to hear. Ẹ.g piano, music, flutes, organ, guitar, etc.
Unpleasant sound are sounds that we do not like and disturbs our ears. For example, generator sound, engines .
Sounds are produced from different sources which are :
1. Human beings produces sound in many different ways by :
(a) blowing of musical instruments. E.g. Flute, trumpet, saxophone, recorder, etc.;
(b) snapping the fingers and clapping the hands;
(c) stamping the feet

4. Flowing streams, waves of the ocean, wind, thunder and thunderstorms.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revision of the previous topic with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by explaining sound Energy and identify it
Step 3 : List the types of sound Energy and gives examples.
Evaluation :
1. ____________ is the result of changing mechanical energy into vibrations. (a) Sound (b) Electrical (c) Chemical
2. The _________ hears the sound when produced. (a) nose (b) ears (c) eyes
3. Both living and non- living things produces sound. (a) True (b) False (c) I don’t know.
4. Sound that are enjoyable to the ear are called ___________. (a) Unpleasant sound (b) Pleasant sound (c) Motor sound
5. All of these can produce pleasant sound except ____________. (a) piano (b) Generator (c) flute
6. Unpleasant sound can damage the ear drum. (a) True (b) False (c) Not sure
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
