Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Define a State
ii. List the features of a state
Content :
A State is a political entity that regulated society and the population within a territory.
In Nigeria, there are thirty – six (36) states and their capitals.
Features of a State.
The following are the features of a state:
1. Population : The most obvious essential features of a state is its people. States where the population shares a general political and social agreement about basic beliefs have the most stable government.
2. Recognition : For a state to be called a territory, it must be recognized by other states and international organization that surround it.
3. Government : A government is the institution through which that state maintain social order.
4. Permanence : A state must be relatively permanent, the permanence makes it possible for a state to develop as it should be.
5. Sovereignty : This means the state has supreme authority within the boundary of its territory. It can make laws, shape foreign policy without the approval of higher authority.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by writing it on the board and states the learning objectives for the learners to read along with him/ her.
Step 3 : He then explains a State to the learners and asks them to mention the state they are from.
Step 4 : The learners then identify and list the features of a state with brief explanations from the teacher.

3. How many states are there in Nigeria.
4. Each state is headed by the ________________________________.
Conclusion : The teacher moves round to make necessary corrections and marks the learners notebooks.
ASSIGNMENT :
Draw a map of Nigeria and identify Lagos State.
