Content :
Subtraction of Numbers
Subtraction means minus or take away or remove some set of numbers in the given numbers.
The sign of minus is ( – ).
When performing subtraction, arrange the numbers such that the larger number comes first at the top while the smaller number is under.
For example :
1. Subtraction 3 2 from 5 8 gives _______.
5 8 – 3 2 = 2 6
T U | Expanded Method |
5 8 | = 5 0 + 8 |
– 3 2 | = – (3 0 + 2) |
2 6 | = 2 0 + 6 |
2. 7 9 – 4 6 = 3 3
T U | Expanded Method |
7 9 | = 7 0 + 9 |
– 4 6 | = – (4 0 + 6) |
3 3 | = 3 0 + 3 |
3. Take away 5 7 from 8 8.
This means : 8 8 – 5 7
T U | Expanded Method |
8 8 | = 8 0 + 8 |
– 5 7 | = – (5 0 + 7) |
3 1 | = 3 0 + 1 |
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by defining subtraction of Numbers.
Step 3 : Identify the Terms used for subtraction of numbers.
Step 4 : Solve problems on subtraction of Numbers with different methods.
Step 5 : Solve questions on subtraction using the expanded method.
Evaluation :
1. What is the difference between 5 8 and 4 8?
2. Take away 2 7 from 9 8.
3. 7 4 minus 5 1.
4. What is the value of 10 less than 3 5?
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson learners were able to answer the questions correctly.
