ii. Identify the different categories of Verb tenses
iii. Describe each category with several examples.
Previous Knowledge : Learners are familiar with verb and types of verbs
Content :
Tenses are used to indicate or point out the time of actions in sentences
In order words there are three basic time frames of tenses in English grammatically which are
1. Present Tense
2. Past Tense
3. Future Tense
These three main division of Tenses can further be grouped in
a) simple
b) Progressive / Continuous Tense
c) Perfect tense
d) Perfect progressive
Today we shall limit the scope of teaching to Present Tense in the four major categories :
A. Simple Present Tense : This tense is used to express habitual actions that are done regularly, always often, everyday or
occasionally.
The third person Singular pronouns subject of these verbs always go with either (s) or (es) as the case may be.
Examples of Simple Present Tense :
1. I do my homework everyday
2. He does his homework everyday
3. She sells bread.
4. You do your homework everyday
5. We do our homework everyday
6. They work hard always.
7. My father is a trader
8. James and John eat rice everyday
B. The Present Continuous Tense : This is used for an action that is going on now. It shows the action is still going on as at the time of reporting using an –ING word.
For examples :
1. I am eating rice now.
2. She is selling fish to a customer now.
3. They are working hard to complete the job.
4. The girls are running to the field.
5. It is raining now.
C. The Present Perfect Tense : This is used for an action which has just finished. It is formed by using has or have and a past participle.
For examples :
i. I have eaten biscuit.
ii. She has just sold some bread.
iii. They have really worked hard.
iv. He has taken the book.
v. I have done my homework.
D. The Present Perfect Continuous Tense : This is used to show an action that began sometime ago and is still going on. It is formed by using have been + participle or has been + participle of the verb.
For examples :
i. I have been eating rice for a year.
ii. She has been selling bread for three years.
iii. They have been working hard.
