Previous Knowledge : Learners have been using some punctuation marks such as comma, full stop, question mark, etc.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Explain the meaning of apostrophe
ii. Identify the Apostrophe sign
iii. Use apostrophe in sentences.
Content :
The Apostrophe is a text character which serves as a punctuation mark in various Languages.
- It is used to show that something belongs to a person. It is used to show ownership or possession of something.
For example :
i. The girls’ bags (plural form)
ii. The cat’s tail (singular form)
iii. That is Oluwa’s comb. (singular form)
Note : When the Apostrophe comes before the ( ‘s ) in possessive form, it is singular but if the Apostrophe comes after the ( s’ ), it is in plural form.
- It can also be used to write the shortened form of some auxiliary verb both in negative and positive forms
For example,
I. She will – She ‘ll
II. He should not – He shouldn’t
Iii. They will not – They won’ t
- It can also be used with pronouns and auxiliary verb “is”, “am” or ” are” in the shortened form as well
For examples,
- “She is” becomes she’s
2. They are becomes they ‘re
3. Where is becomes where’ s
4. I am a boy becomes I’m a boy.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson by asking the learners questions orally.
Step 2 : He explains the new topic to the learners by describing the Apostrophe
