Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :

ii. Describe the use of ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’
Content :
The articles “a”, “an” and “the” are placed before nouns. The “a” or “an” are used to show things which are not specific. “The” is used or placed before nouns which are specific.
1. “A” or “a” is used with word beginning with a consonant. For examples, a boy, a ship, a train, a mouse, a rat, a flower, a cup, a house, etc. “A” is also used before words starting with a vowel that has the sound of a consonant, that is word that sound like “u” . For examples, a uniform, a European man,
2. “An” or “an” is used with words beginning with vowels. For examples, an egg, an apple, an igloo, an umbrella, an ink, an orange, an Indian, an owl, etc. It is also used before words that has a silent “h”. For Example, an hour, an honor, an honest man, etc.
3. “The” is the definite article. It is used to refer to a particular person or thing. It is also used when there is only one of that particular thing. Examples are : the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, the girl, the university, etc.
“The” is used before the names of rivers, oceans, seas, mountain and particular places. E.g. the River Nile, the Pacific Ocean, etc.

Step 3 : Describe the types of articles and state their uses.
Step 4 : Solve problems on articles
