CONTENT:
Meaning of Local Government
There are three levels of government in Nigeria. The federal government which is the most powerful government has its seat in Abuja.
The state government is the second and are in the capitals of each of the thirty – six states in Nigeria.
The local government is the body of people who controls the public affairs of the local government.
The Local government is the closest to the people. It is also known as the ‘grassroots’ government. The head of a local government is a Chairman. Councillors are also elected to represent the people at the local government council. The members of the council assist the chairman in making laws and running the affairs of local government.
The local government receives money from the state government in order to carry out its duties. In addition to this, the local government aldo collects taxes and levies from the people. It needs this money in order to pay the salaries of its workers, run schools and healthcare centres and keep the local community clean and safe for everyone.
Importance of Local Government
The local governments are very important to us because of the functions they perform and their activities. Some of them are as follows:
i. Provision of social amenities like market stalls, schools, clinic, water, etc.
ii. Setting up laws to guide the behaviour of people in the society.
iii. Maintenance of law and order in the local government area
iv. Provision of roads to link communities
v. Provision of health services in the local government area
vi. Establishment of customary courts in their area.
Presentation Steps:
Step I: Revision of previous topic with the learners.
Step II: Introduces the new topic to the learners by define the local government.
Step III: He/ she states the importance of local government.
Step IV: He/she explained how the local government get money to run affairs.
Evaluation: The teacher reviews the lesson explained by asking the following questions :
1. What is local government?
2. What is the name of the local government area of your school?
3. The _______________________ is the head of the local government.
4. State five importance of the local government.
Conclusion: At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly, while the teacher make some necessary corrections.
