Content :
Tuber crops are crops that are very rich in carbohydrates. They are underground crops that gives energy to the body.
Examples of tuber crops are yams, cassava, sweet potato, Cocoyam, etc.
The most popular tuber crop is yam. It belongs to Discoreaceae, which has six varieties. These are:
i. White yam. ii. Water yam
iii. Chinese yam iv. Yellow yam
v. Aerial yam vi. Trifoliate yam
Yam is stored in the barn. It may be processed into yam powder or flour.
Classification of Tuber Crops
Tuber crops are classified into two major groups. These are
a. Stem tubers e.g. Cassava
b. Root tubers e.g. Yam,
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by describing tuber crops.
Step 3 : The teacher asks the learners to give examples of tuber crops.
Step 4 : He / she then list and explains the classifications of tuber crops with examples.
