Instructional Material : Pictorial chart showing solid shapes such as cube, cuboid, with their formula for finding volume.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to :
i. Find the volume of a cube
ii. Calculate the volume of a cuboid
iii. Solve word problems Involving volume of a cube and cuboid.
Content :
Volume is the amount of space a solid takes up. It is measured in cubic units. That is cm³ or m³.
For example, a solid with three dimensional shapes such as cube and cuboid has length, breadth and height.
Therefore, volume of cube or cuboid is calculated by multiplying its length, breadth and height.
Volume = Length x breadth x height
From the formula above, we can also have :
1. Length = Volume ÷ (breadth x height)
2. Breadth = Volume ÷ ( length x height)
3. Height = Volume ÷ ( length x breadth)
Worked examples:
1.) Calculate the volume of a cuboid with length 16cm, breadth 10cm and height 7cm.
Solution :
Length = 16cm breadth = 10cm height = 7cm
Volume = L x B x H
= 16cm x 10cm x 7cm
= 1120 cm³
2.) What is the height of a cuboid with length 10m, breadth 5m and volume 100 m³ ?
Solution :
Length = 10m
Breadth = 5m
Volume = 100 m³
Height = Volume ÷ ( length x breadth)
= 100 ÷ ( 10 x 5)
= 100 / 50
= 2m
Therefore, the height is = 2m
3.) Find the volume of a cube, whose side is 9m
Solution:
Length = 9m
Breadth = 9m
Height = 9m
Volume = L x B x H
= 9m x 9m x 9m
= 729 m³
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : Revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking questions .
Step 2 : Introduces the new topic by explaining solid shapes and volume.
Step 3 : Identifies the parts of a cube and cuboid. State the formula for finding volume and solves several examples.
Step 4 : Give the learners some tasks to do.
Evaluation :
Answer the following questions and show all workings :
1. What is volume?
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. The unit of volume is __________________. (a) cm or m (b) cm³ or m³ (c) cm² or m²
3. A solid shape is a shape with ____________ dimensions. (a) two (b) three (c) five
4. Calculate the volume of a cuboid, with length 21cm, breadth 17cm and height 8cm.
5. What is the volume of a cube whose side is 12m ?
6. Find the height of the cuboid with length 10cm, breadth 5cm and volume 150 cm³
7. Find the length of a cuboid with breadth 6m, height 4m and volume 120 m³
Conclusion : At the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly while the teacher makes some corrections.
