First Term Lesson Note for Week Ten
Class : Primary Four
Subject : Basic Science and Technology
Topic : Water (Why water is different from other liquid)
Duration : 40 Minutes
Period : Single Period
Reference Book :
- Basic Science and Technology for Primary Schools, Book 4.
- Lagos State Unified schemes of work for Upper Primary, (Primary 4 – 6).
- Online Resources
Instructional Material : Chart showing the definition of basic terms of water such as evaporation, condensation and freezing.
Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson learners will be able to
i. Define water and identify it sources
ii. Explain the concept of evaporation, condensation and freezing
iii. Differentiate between evaporation and condensation.
Content :
Water is a colourless, odourless and tasteless liquid. Water is a universal solvent.
Water has no smell, no taste, and no odour.
Water can be gotten from two main sources, which are :
1. Natural sources : These sources exist in nature, that is made by God. Examples are rain, well, pond, river, stream, lake, spring, sea or ocean, etc.
2. Artificial sources : These sources are an-made. Examples are dam, tap, hand pump, boreholes, etc.
Formation/ Movement of water.
Water is formed through the process of condensation and evaporation.
Water cycle is the upward movement of water from the earth’s surface to the cloud and the gathering of water in the cloud which falls as rain down to the surface of the earth.
Evaporation is the process of taking water upward to the cloud with the aid of sunlight.
Condensation is the process by which water taken upward through evaporation gathers in the cloud and falls down as rain when the cloud is too heavy to hold.
Freezing is the process by which water becomes frozen to form ice.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asking them questions orally.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new topic by describing water in terms of colour, odour and taste.
Step 3 : Identify the different sources of water and gives examples.
Step 4 : Explains the formation of water and Water cycle.
Evaluation :
1. What is water?
2. List two sources of water.
3. Mention three examples of natural sources of water.
4. Define the following terms :
i. Evaporation – __________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________
ii. Condensation – ________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________
iii. Freezing – ___________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________
Conclusion : At the end of the end of the lesson, learners were able to answer the questions correctly. The teacher makes necessary corrections.
