Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :

Content :
Loss of Soil Fertility:
Loss of Soil fertility is when the soil is no longer productive. The soil nutrients has been used up due to continuous cropping on the same farmland year in, year out. It is also caused as a result of Bush burning method in clearing the land. Soil also loose it nutrient when tuber crops are grown continuously on the same piece of land.
WAYS OF MAKING SOIL FERTILE:
The soil which has lost its nutrients can be made fertile again, if the following processes are applied by the farmer.
- MANURING: use of manure and fertilizer will give the soil nutrient and make it productive.
- MULCHING: it makes soil fertile by covering the top surface of the soil and plant with palm fronds, leavers to prevent air or winds from blowing the soil particles away and thereby adding nutrient to the soil when it decay.
- CROP ROTATION: planting of different crop on a farm land at a time improve the soil fertility.
- BUSH FALLOWING: leaving a farm land for sometimes make the soil to regain it loss nutrient and make it fertile again.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The Teacher revises the previous lesson with the learners by asked them questions on Soil fertility.
Step 2 : The Teacher introduces the topic by explaining loss of soil fertility and it causes.
Step 3 : The Teacher explains ways of making the soil fertile again.
Step 4 : Learners participate in the class discussion
