Content :
Meaning of Weeds
Weeds are unwanted plants that grow where they are not planted.
Weeds are classified into three based on their structures and leaves. These are : grasses, shrubs and trees.
Examples of Weeds are:
Tridax procubens, goat weed, milk weed, stubborn grass (sida acuta), carpet grass, Guinea grass, Spear grass, Eleais guinesis, Talinum triangulaire(water leaf), Axonopus compress, Impereta cylindrical, etc.
Characteristics of Weeds.
1. Weeds are very stubborn to curb.
2. They multiply in large numbers.
3. Some Weeds are beneficial, while some poisonous
4. Some Weeds serve as food for livestock.
5. Weeds generally compete with the main crops on the farmland for space, nutrient, sunlight and water in the soil.
6. Some Weeds are used as medicine to cure ailment.
7. Weeds may also harbour pests of crop plant.
Presentation Steps :
Step 1 : The teacher revises the previous lesson taught with the learners by asking questions orally.
Step 2 : He/ she introduces the new lesson by calling the learners in turn to define Weeds.
Step 3 : He/ she then defines weed and list examples of Weeds.
Step 4 : The teacher then state the characteristics of Weeds
