Learning Objectives : By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to :
i. Identify the place values of Numbers up to Thousands
ii. Write numbers in expanded forms
2453 = 2000 + 400 + 50 + 3
iii. Write numbers in words
Previous Knowledge: Learners are familiar with place values of numbers and writing of numbers in expanded form.
Content:
Whole numbers are numbers without decimals.
A.) From your previous knowledge on the place values of numbers
Thousands are four digits and it carries three zeroes that ranges from 1000 – 9000.
Hundreds are three digits and it consist of two zeroes that ranges from 100 – 900.
Tens are two digits that carries one. It ranges from 10 – 90.
Units are single number with one digit and no zero. It ranges from 1 – 9.
B.) Writing in words: Using expanded forms :
For examples
In 82, we have 8tens and 2units = 80 + 2
82 = Eighty two
Also, in 163, 1hundred + 6tens + 3units = 100 + 60 + 3
163 = One hundred and Sixty three
In 2758, we have 2thousands + 7hundreds + 5tens + 8units = 2000 + 700 + 50 + 8
2758 = Two thousand, Seven hundred and fifty eight.
When writing in words, first assign place value to the given number. Then call each digit with the value assigned starting from left hand to the right hand side.
For examples:
Write in words
H T U
1.) 3 1 5 = Three hundred and fifteen
Th H T U
2.) 1 5 7 6 = One thousand, five hundred and seventy six
Th H T U
3.) 8 3 0 9 = Eight thousand, three hundred and nine.
Presentation Steps:
Step 1: The teacher revises the previous class work with the learners.
Step 2: He/ she introduces the new lesson to the learners by asking to write some given numbers in words.
Step 3: He/ she then explains how to write in words using the concept of place value.
Step 4: The teacher then gives the learners some work to do as class work.
Step 5: He / she also gives them some write in figure by arranging them according to the place value.
Evaluation questions:
Answer the following questions.
1.) what is the place value of 5 in the following digits
a. 257 = __________________
